Classification of pathways of communication between pulp & periodontium:

Developmental origin: apical foramen, accessory/ lateral canals, permeability of cementum, developmental grooves |

Pathological origin: vertical fibres, idiopathic resorption, loss of cementum due to external irritants |
|
Latrogenic irritants: exposure of dentinal tubules via root planning, root fracture due to endodontic treatment. |
